The story
Most lucky cats wave. This one has put its paws together, the way people do at a shrine before they ask for something: oinori-neko, the praying cat. In pink, the thing it asks for is usually closer to the heart.
The meaning
Pink is traditionally the colour of romance. A pink maneki-neko is said to bring affection and strengthen the bond between two people. It is the cat for an anniversary, for the first Valentine's Day, for a long marriage that deserves a small thank you. It also suits a friend who is hoping, quietly, to meet someone.
The craft
This finish is called momo-mori: momo means peach, pink in this case, and mori means raised. The enamel is applied in layers, so the red, blue and gold flowers rise from the surface. Run a finger over one and you feel the petal before you see it. Every flower is built up by hand, one layer at a time, so the height and the spacing differ a little from cat to cat. Yours will be close to the photos, never an exact copy. Made in Ishikawa, in the Kutani tradition.
Living with it
About 11 cm tall, it belongs on a nightstand or a dresser, near where two people start and end their day.
How it comes
In a paper box, wrapped carefully and sent from Fukuoka. If someone comes to mind, you might pass the story on to them.
How it travels
Packed safely, insured in full
Every piece is packed by hand in Fukuoka inside a sturdy 3 mm corrugated carton, cushioned all round with air pillows so it cannot move. It travels with tracking all the way to your door: by EMS, insured for its full value, on orders of $100 or more, and by tracked airmail below that.
