The story
White is the first colour. The earliest maneki-neko were white, and the cats left in their thousands at Gōtokuji in Tokyo are white too, brought back by people whose wishes came true. This one is white as well, but with its paws together. In Japanese it is oinori-neko, the praying cat.
The meaning
White is traditionally linked to good luck in general, the plain kind with no particular errand. It is the cat for a moment that has no single wish in it: a housewarming, a wedding, a new baby, a retirement. Give it when you want to wish someone well in every direction at once.
The craft
Here the white is the page, and the flowers are the writing. The porcelain is left pale and the blossoms are painted over it in bright colour, each one placed by hand. Where one cat has a cluster on the back, the next has them climbing the chest. That is the nature of hand-painting. Yours will be close to the photos, never a copy. Made in Ishikawa, in the Kutani tradition.
Living with it
About 11 cm tall, it sits comfortably in the middle of a mantel or a windowsill. It reads well from across a room.
How it comes
In a paper box, wrapped carefully and sent from Fukuoka. If a friend is starting something new, this is a quiet way to say so.
How it travels
Packed safely, insured in full
Every piece is packed by hand in Fukuoka inside a sturdy 3 mm corrugated carton, cushioned all round with air pillows so it cannot move. It travels with tracking all the way to your door: by EMS, insured for its full value, on orders of $100 or more, and by tracked airmail below that.
