The story
Most lucky cats wave. This one has put its paws together, the way people do at a shrine before they ask for something. It is called oinori-neko, the praying cat, and it is a cat for the long stretch before the answer comes.
The meaning
Green is said to stand for study, growth and good health. That makes it a cat for a student with an exam date circled on the calendar, or for anyone starting over: a new course at fifty, a first semester abroad, a career change. Give it to the person who is working hard and cannot yet see the result.
The craft
Kutani porcelain from Ishikawa is known for bold colours painted over the glaze, called overglaze. Here the green covers the whole body, and the cherry blossoms are brushed on top of it, one petal at a time, then fired again. Because every blossom is painted by hand, no two cats carry the same branch. Some have a flower on the ear, some on the shoulder. Yours will be close to the photos, never an exact twin. Made in Japan.
Living with it
About 11 cm tall, it sits easily on a desk beside a lamp and a stack of notes. If you have ever studied late and wondered whether it would count for anything, you know who this one is for.
How it comes
In a paper box, wrapped carefully and sent from Fukuoka. If you know a student, tell them about it.
How it travels
Packed safely, insured in full
Every piece is packed by hand in Fukuoka inside a sturdy 3 mm corrugated carton, cushioned all round with air pillows so it cannot move. It travels with tracking all the way to your door: by EMS, insured for its full value, on orders of $100 or more, and by tracked airmail below that.
