The story
In 901 the scholar Sugawara no Michizane was exiled from Kyoto to Dazaifu, near where we live in Fukuoka. Before he left he wrote a poem to the plum tree in his garden: when the east wind blows, send me your scent; do not forget the spring because I am gone. The story says the tree missed him so much that it flew to Dazaifu overnight to be with him. A plum tree said to be that one still flowers at the shrine there every February.
The craft
Mino-yaki, made in Japan. A white kohiki slip over the clay, a painted plum branch, and gold (kinsai) on the blossoms. Because of the gold, wash it by hand and keep it out of the microwave and the oven.
Living with it
The plum flowers before the cherry, often with snow still on the ground: a bowl for late winter mornings. If you have ever lived far from where you grew up, you will understand the tree. Send it to someone who is far from home.
• Mino-yaki, kohiki with gold (kinsai) • Bowl only (no whisk) • Gift box, new • Made in Japan
