The story

In the spring of 1598, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who had united Japan, had seven hundred cherry trees planted at Daigo-ji in Kyoto, then invited some thirteen hundred guests to sit under them. It was the most lavish flower-viewing party Japan had ever seen. Five months later Hideyoshi was dead. Daigo-ji is still one of Kyoto's great cherry gardens.

Making tea in the open air is called nodate.

The craft

Made in Japan; three of the four bowls are Mino-yaki. Two bowls are kohiki, a white coat over the clay that looks dusted with powder: one with pink-red cherry blossom, one with a red plum branch touched with gold. The camellia is hand-painted with wax-resist. The smallest is earthenware, in a pattern called Man'yō sōka. Only the kohiki cherry bowl is microwave and dishwasher safe; wash the others by hand. None go in the oven.

Living with it

Four bowls, four people, one whisk passed round. You may be the person who notices the first buds before anyone else.
