The story
In the year 730, the governor of Dazaifu, a poet called Ōtomo no Tabito, invited his friends to a party under the plum trees. Each guest wrote a poem. The preface to those poems, written that day, ended up in the Man'yōshū, Japan's oldest book of poetry.
Nearly thirteen hundred years later, in 2019, Japan needed a name for its new era. For the first time it was taken not from a Chinese classic but from a Japanese one: two characters from that preface, Rei and Wa. A garden party in Dazaifu named the age we are living in. The pattern on this bowl is called Man'yō sōka: the flowers and grasses of those poems.
The craft
The bowl is earthenware, made in Japan. The bamboo whisk comes in the maker's gift set, in its own tube. Wash the bowl by hand. Microwave safe; not for the oven.
Living with it
Nodate means making tea in the open air. The bowl is small enough to carry to a park bench, and the whisk travels in its tube. You may be someone who keeps saying you will start. This is a first matcha set for exactly that.

How it travels
Packed safely, insured in full
Every piece is packed by hand in Fukuoka inside a sturdy 3 mm corrugated carton, cushioned all round with air pillows so it cannot move. It travels with tracking all the way to your door: by EMS, insured for its full value, on orders of $100 or more, and by tracked airmail below that.
