The story
Five hundred years ago, potters in Korea brushed white slip over dark clay, so their bowls looked dusted with flour. Japanese tea masters loved the unevenness, the little places where the dark clay showed through, and treasured the few that reached Japan.
The style is called kohiki, powder-coated, and Japanese potters have made it ever since.
The craft
Mino-yaki, made in Japan in Gifu prefecture. White kohiki over the clay, with cherry blossom painted in pink-red. Microwave and dishwasher safe; not for the oven.
Living with it
Big enough to whisk properly, light enough to hold in both hands, the way matcha is drunk in Japan. If you are the one who always orders the matcha latte, this is where the habit could start at home. A good gift alongside a tin of matcha.
• Mino-yaki, kohiki, microwave and dishwasher safe • Bowl only (no whisk) • Gift box, new • Made in Japan
