The story
The camellia, tsubaki, flowers in the coldest weeks of the Japanese winter, when almost nothing else does. When it is finished it does not drop its petals one by one. The whole flower falls at once, still perfect, onto the ground.
A later story says samurai avoided camellias because a flower that falls whole looked too much like a head. In fact the shoguns of Edo loved them, and so did the tea masters. For them the camellia was the flower of winter, and a single bud in a bamboo vase was all a tea room needed. Same flower, two ways of looking.
The craft
Mino-yaki, made in Japan. Hand-painted with wax-resist, so the glaze rolls off the painted parts and every bowl comes out a little different from the next. Wash by hand; not for the oven.
Living with it
A winter bowl. Hot matcha on a dark morning, both hands round it. If you are at your best when everyone else is hibernating, this one is yours. Or give it to the friend who is.
• Mino-yaki, hand-painted with wax-resist • Bowl only (no whisk) • Gift box, new • Made in Japan
