The story

Four hundred years ago, so the story goes, a lord was riding past a poor little temple on the edge of Edo when he saw the temple cat lift its paw, as if calling him in. Curious, he went in to see. A moment later lightning split the tree he had been standing under. He became the temple's patron, and the temple was never poor again.

That is why the beckoning cat sits by the till in so many Japanese shops. The words on this flask are shōbai hanjō: may business thrive.

The craft

Mino-yaki porcelain, made in Japan in Gifu prefecture, from the Fukuraku series, fortune and ease. Microwave and dishwasher safe; not for the oven.

Living with it

Pour from the flask into the two tall cups for a quiet drink, or set out the five shallow cups when friends come round: there is a cat at the bottom of each one. Somebody you know has just opened a shop, started a business, or taken the leap. If that somebody is you, the first toast is yours.
