The story
The maneki-neko is the cat that beckons, the one you see by the till in shops and restaurants all over Japan. A raised paw calls in customers and good fortune. The coin it holds is a koban, an old gold coin, so the wish written on it is a wish for luck that keeps arriving.
The cloths
Three are tenugui, the thin cotton cloth Japan has used for centuries as a towel, a headband or a gift wrap. The fourth is a yukemuri towel, named after the steam that rises off a hot spring: printed cotton on the front, absorbent pile on the back.
Living with it
Wrap a present in one, hang one in the kitchen, keep the onsen towel by the bath. Or give the set as it is, to the person who already owns too many cats and will be delighted to own four more.
The short ends of a tenugui are left raw: a few threads loosen in the first washes, then it stops. Wash in cold water the first time.
