The story
In Japan, the first dream of the New Year is said to tell you how the year will go. The luckiest thing you can dream of, according to an old saying, is Mount Fuji. Second comes a hawk, third an aubergine. Nobody quite agrees why. One popular explanation points to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun, who retired to Suruga, a province famous for exactly those three things: the mountain, the hawks, and the early aubergines.
Karakusa vines never stop growing, so they stand for good fortune that keeps going. A bell hangs from the red collar marked fuku, good fortune. The raised paw draws luck in: a left paw is said to call people and customers, a right paw money.
The craft
Kutani porcelain, size 5.5-gō, 17 cm tall, in the bold overglaze enamels the Kutani kilns are known for. It comes unused, with its storage box and a red cushion.
Living with it
At 17 cm it sits easily on a desk, a shelf by the door or a shop counter. If you have a dream for the coming year, this is a good cat to tell it to. A New Year gift, or one for a new shop.
