The story

Daruma was a monk who, the legend says, sat facing a cave wall for nine years until his arms and legs wasted away. So the daruma has none, and when you push him over he rolls back up. "Fall seven times, rise eight."

The beckoning cat has the opposite job. It does not wait. It lifts a paw and calls luck in, the way the temple cat in Edo once called a passing lord out of the path of lightning.

Put the two together and the piece says both halves of it: keep going, and let good fortune find you on the way.

The craft

Kutani porcelain from Ishikawa is known for five colours: red, green, yellow, purple and navy. All five are here, and the detail is worth a close look.

Living with it

Small enough for a bookshelf or a desk. If you are halfway through something hard, it may be the right thing to look at in the mornings. Someone about to start a new job, a degree or a business would be glad to be given it, because it speaks to the effort as well as the luck.
