The story

In the pleasure quarter of Edo, the story goes, a famous courtesan called Usugumo kept a cat she adored. One night, as she went to the privy, the cat would not leave her alone. It tugged at her kimono and yowled until the house owner, sure it was bewitched, drew his sword and struck off its head. The head flew into the privy and sank its teeth into a snake that had been hiding there, ready to strike. Usugumo was heartbroken. A customer had a carving of the cat made for her to keep, and some say that was the first beckoning cat.

The craft

Mino-yaki, made in Japan in Gifu prefecture. The cats sit at the bottom of each bowl, so you meet them when the bowl is empty. Microwave and dishwasher safe.

Living with it

Rice, noodles, soup. In many Japanese homes each person has their own bowl. If you live with someone who says good morning to the cat before anyone else, these are for your table. A gift for a couple, a new home, or anyone whose house is run by a cat.

• Two bowls, Ø 15 × H 6.7 cm • Two pairs of chopsticks, 22.5 cm • Gift box, new • Bowls made in Japan
