The story
Edo parents loved a good pun, and this little dog is two of them. Put the bamboo radical, ⺮, on top of the character for dog, 犬, and you get something that looks very like 笑, laughter. A dog in a basket is a wish that a child will grow up laughing.
The second pun is practical. A basket lets water run straight through it. In the same way, the story goes, a child with this dog by the bed would not get a blocked nose, which in the days before medicine meant not catching cold.
The craft
Hariko: layers of paper pressed over a mould and painted by hand, finished here with a real woven bamboo basket over the head.
Living with it
A shelf in a child's room, or the quiet corner of a desk. If there is a small person whose laugh you could pick out of a crowd, you already know who this is for. A gift for a new baby, a first birthday, or a friend who needs cheering up.
