The story
In the late Edo period the shogun's government, worried about extravagance, passed laws against luxury. Fine silk, big festivals and elaborate toys all came under suspicion. The toymakers of Edo found a way round it. If big toys were a problem, they would make small ones, tiny and exact, the kind you could hold in a closed hand. The style came to be called Edo shumi gangu, toys for Edo tastes, and it outlived the laws by nearly two centuries.
Sukeroku, a tiny shop on Nakamise, the lane that leads to Sensō-ji in Asakusa, is one of the best-known names for these toys.
The craft
Hariko: layers of paper pressed over a mould and painted by hand, so every one is a little different. The dog, inu, is one of Japan's oldest folk-toy subjects, a charm for protection and for children's health.
Living with it
A bookshelf, a low side table, a windowsill where its profile catches the light. Something this small asks you to come close. If you collect small things that make you smile, it will fit right in. A gift for a new baby, or for anyone who loves dogs.
