The story

Dogs give birth easily and to many puppies at once. So in old Japan, when a baby was on the way, families turned to the dog. A pregnant woman would visit a shrine on the Day of the Dog to pray for a safe birth. When the baby came, relatives arrived at its first shrine visit carrying a papier-mâché dog, the inu-hariko, to stand guard over the child as it grew.

Every region made its own. Nagoya hariko have their own colours and their own faces.

The craft

Hariko is layers of washi paper pressed over a mould, dried, then painted by hand. It is light, warm to the touch, and slightly different every time.

Living with it

A shelf in a nursery, or an entryway where it can keep watch. If you were the one who sent the first present when a friend's baby arrived, you know the instinct. A gift for a baby shower, a first birthday, a new grandchild.
