May Doll

Tokyo Kyugetsu Kabuto Helmet

This Tokyo Kyugetsu Kabuto helmet is a traditional Japanese May doll from 2000, featuring the iconic Dragon and Tiger motif for Boy's Day celebrations. It is a refined example of craftsmanship from one of Tokyo's most established makers. The Kabuto, or samurai helmet, is the centerpiece of the Tango no Sekku festival, held every May to honor the health and strength of sons. This set depicts the legendary Dragon and Tiger, symbols of power and courage in Japanese tradition. The dragon represents the heavens and the tiger the earth, a duality often invoked to provide protection to the home. Historically, these displays were intended to ward off illness and misfortune. Placing one in a room serves as a quiet reminder of resilience and family legacy. The gold and black finishes are characteristic of the fine work produced by Kyugetsu at the turn of the millennium.
