The story

The classic Shigaraki tanuki carries two things: a sake bottle in one paw and a little account book in the other. Both come from an old errand. A child would be sent to the sake shop with the shop's lent bottle and the family's book. The shopkeeper filled the bottle, wrote the amount in the book, and the bill was settled at the end of the month. No money changed hands. It all ran on trust.

So the bottle is not really about drinking. It is about being the kind of household a shop will fill a bottle for. The tanuki of folk tales is a shape-shifter and a show-off who loves a drink, but on this point he is serious.

The craft

Mino-yaki, made in Japan in Gifu prefecture, in the familiar Shigaraki tanuki shape. Brown clay, dark patches round the eyes. Microwave and dishwasher safe; not for the oven.

Living with it

Warm sake, two cups, one long story. Every group of friends has one person whose stories get better each time they are told. You may know exactly who that is, or it may be you. This is their flask.
