The story
Real tanuki, the raccoon dogs of the Japanese countryside, are unusual among wild animals: a pair usually stays together for life, and the father helps raise the young, bringing food and keeping watch over the den. It suits the figure: a parent-and-child tanuki is said to stand for a household that grows and stays together.
Shigaraki added its own touches. The straw hat is said to keep misfortune off, and the name tanuki sounds like ta-nuki, "getting ahead of others".
The craft
Shigaraki, in the hills of Shiga prefecture, is one of Japan's six ancient kilns, and its tanuki stand by the doors of shops and homes all over the country. This family is glazed ceramic and comes unused.
Living with it
At 30 cm it holds its own at a front door. If your own family is the thing you are proudest of, this is a quiet way to say so. It makes a gift for a wedding, a new baby, or a family moving into a new home.
