The story

Every February, on the night of Setsubun, Japanese families throw roasted beans out of the door and shout "Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi!" Demons out, good luck in. Someone, usually a father, puts on a red oni mask and gets chased round the house by the children.

But at Kinpusen-ji, a mountain temple in Yoshino, the monks shout something different: "Fuku wa uchi, oni mo uchi!" Good luck in, and the demons in too. They invite the oni inside to reform them, rather than sending them off to bother somebody else.

This figure takes the same view. The tanuki brings fortune and prosperity; the red oni, once he is on your side, keeps illness and disaster away.

The craft

Shigaraki ware, stoneware in a deep red glaze. Shigaraki, in the hills of Shiga prefecture, is one of Japan's six ancient kiln towns, and its tanuki stand by doors all over the country.

Living with it

An entryway, the first thing to greet whoever comes through the door. If you have a soft spot for the troublemaker in every story, he is yours. A gift for someone with a new front door and a sense of humour.
