The story
In the pottery town of Shigaraki, the tanuki by the door is read like a list of good habits. Eight of them, the town says. The straw hat is for trouble you did not see coming. The big eyes are for looking around before you decide. The smile is for the people you meet. The sake flask is for the good name you earn over years. The round belly is for staying calm when a decision is hard. The tail is for finishing what you start.
Nobody in Shigaraki pretends a clay tanuki does any of this for you. That is the point. He stands by the door so that you see the list every time you go out.
The craft
Shigaraki ware, made in Japan in Shiga prefecture, one of the six old kiln towns of Japan. Brown clay, dark glaze round the eyes, a pale belly. A 5-gō tanuki, 17 cm tall.
Living with it
Put him by the front door, where every guest passes. Most of us could do with the reminder about the tail. Or give him to someone who has just got the keys to a new place.
