The story
In the autumn of 1587, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the most powerful man in Japan, put up notices all over Kyoto. He would hold a great tea gathering in the pine woods of Kitano Shrine, and anyone could come, farmer or lord, as long as they brought a kettle, a bowl and something to sit on. Around a thousand tea places sprang up among the trees. Hideyoshi himself served tea, and so did Sen no Rikyū. It was meant to last ten days. It ended after one, and nobody is quite sure why.
Tea in the open air is called nodate, and this set is made for it.
The craft
A ceramic matcha bowl hand-painted with plum blossom, the first flower of the year. With it, a bamboo whisk, chasen, which keeps its shape in a dedicated case, and a bamboo scoop, chashaku, for measuring the tea.
Living with it
Pack it for a picnic, a garden, a balcony on the first warm morning. If you have been meaning to start a small daily ritual, this is about as small as it gets. A gift for a friend who loves matcha, or one who likes to be outside.
