The story

At Shōjōji, a temple in Kisarazu, the story goes, the priest was kept awake on moonlit nights by drumming in the garden. He looked out and found the tanuki of the hills drumming on their own round bellies, dancing under the trees. Instead of chasing them off, he fetched his own drum and played back. Night after night the priest and the tanuki tried to outplay each other.

Japanese children still sing the song about it: "Shō, shō, Shōjōji." It is the tanuki at his best, a creature who turns up uninvited and makes the evening better.

The craft

Mino-yaki, from the Mino region of Gifu, Japan. Earthy, textured glaze and the classic folk shape of the tanuki, in the cheerful style of the Shōwa years.

Living with it

Warm a little sake, pour two cups, and let the evening run long. You know the friend who always stays for one more. Or perhaps that is you. A gift for anyone who likes their table a little noisy.
