The story

Long ago, the sutras say, a king heard a Buddha preach and gave up his throne to become a monk. He took the name Dharmākara and made forty-eight vows. The most famous was this: he would not become a Buddha himself unless anyone who called his name with a sincere heart could be reborn in his Pure Land, a place without suffering. He became Amida, so the vow holds.

That is why, for centuries, people in Japan have said his name, Namu Amida Butsu, at a funeral or a bedside. In Japan each zodiac year has a protector, and Amida watches over people born in the years of the Dog and the Boar.

The craft

The figure carries the mark of Makita Shūun, a recognised name in traditional Buddhist casting, and comes with its original wooden storage box and explanatory papers.

Living with it

A home altar, a study shelf, a quiet corner. If you were born in a Dog or Boar year, or someone you love was, this is their guardian. A gift for a birthday, or for a family keeping someone's memory.
