Kiyomizu-yaki Zodiac Rat, Hand-Glazed
This ceramic rat is a signed work by Yamasawa Shoko. It was produced at a Kyo-yaki Kiyomizu-yaki [京焼・清水焼] kiln. The sculpture is formed from stoneware and finished with a hand-applied glaze. In the Japanese tradition, the rat is the first animal of the zodiac. It is said to be a symbol of prosperity and fertility. Because the creature is associated with industry and foresight, figures like this are often kept in a home or workspace to invite abundance. This is a vintage piece. It arrives from the studio in Fukuoka with a written account of the work and its maker.
