The story
Long ago at Takasago, the story goes, a travelling priest met an old couple sweeping fallen needles under a great pine. He asked about the tree. They told him it was one of a pair of pines, the other far away at Sumiyoshi, that had grown old together across the water. Then they revealed that they were the spirits of the two pines, and vanished.
The tale became a Noh play, and the old couple of Takasago became the picture of a long, happy marriage. Pine already stood for long life; Takasago made it stand for a long marriage too. On this cat it sits alongside Mount Fuji, the luckiest sight in a New Year dream. A raised left paw is said to call in people and customers, a right paw money.
The craft
Mori is enamel built up with a brush until it stands proud of the porcelain and catches the light. Kutani porcelain has been made in Ishikawa since the 1650s, known for its bold overglaze colours. This one is size 7-gō.
Living with it
A cat for a beginning: a shop's opening day, a new home, a wedding. If you hope to grow old beside someone, the pine is for you.
