The story
The old chronicles tell of Hiruko, the first child of the two gods who made Japan, and a later tradition says that child became Ebisu. He was born without bones, and his parents, ashamed, set him adrift on the sea in a boat of reeds. Somewhere along the coast, the story goes, he washed ashore and the fishermen who found him took him in. He became the god of fishermen and of honest trade.
Daikokuten came from much further away, from India by way of China, and in Japan he became the god of the kitchen, the rice store and the family's wealth. Ebisu brings fair dealing and a good catch; Daikoku brings plenty. Together they are Japan's best-loved gods of commerce, and in shops and homes they are kept side by side.
