The story
A poor young man, the old tale goes, found a crane caught in a trap in the snow and set it free. A few nights later a young woman knocked at his door and asked to stay. She became his wife. She offered to weave cloth on one condition: he must never look while she worked. The cloth she made was so beautiful it sold for a fortune. But he grew curious, and one night he looked. At the loom stood a crane, pulling out her own feathers to weave. Seen, she could not stay. She flew away.
The crane, tsuru, stands for long life and faithfulness in Japan, and for love that gives more than it should.
The craft
Kutani ware, in soft gradients of blue: pale cranes over blue hills. The signature on the piece reads 鶴連山, Tsururenzan.
