gold leaf pine crane flower vessel
Kutani Ryusen Vase
This Kutani Ryusen vase displays the classic imagery of pine and crane, finished with gold leaf accents. A refined piece that brings Japanese tradition home, it is a testament to the storied techniques of Kutani-yaki, a style of Japanese porcelain known for its vivid colors and intricate overglaze enamels. The crane and the pine tree are among the most revered motifs in Japanese art, representing longevity and resilience. The crane is said to live for a thousand years, while the pine remains green through the harshest winters. Together, they form a classic pairing often seen in works dedicated to health and enduring strength. Kato Ryusen is a noted name in this tradition, recognized for the skill required to balance the bold use of gold leaf with delicate brushwork. The rounded form of the vessel allows the scene to wrap fully around the viewer, creating a focal point that changes as the light hits the gold accents. It is intended to house a single, simple branch or to stand as an object of contemplation on its own.
