The story

A calico cat, mike-neko, has three colours: white, black and orange. Almost all of them are female. A male calico is so unusual that, the story goes, Japanese sailors once paid a fortune to have one on board. A ship with a male calico, they believed, would never sink and never lose its way home.

On land, the calico is the cat people choose for a new home or a shop's first day. At Gōtokuji temple in Tokyo, one of the places that claim the beckoning cat, people who get their wish bring their cat back and leave it with thousands of others.

The craft

The patterns are built up in mori: thick enamel laid on with a brush until it stands proud of the porcelain. Kutani porcelain has been made in Ishikawa since the 1650s and is known for five bold enamel colours: green, yellow, purple, deep blue, red. This cat is size 7-gō, in a calico coat.

Living with it

Made to be seen from across a room or a shop. If you are about to set out on something of your own, a calico is the traditional company to take. A good gift for an opening or a move. Unused, in its original box with a red cushion.
