The story
Japan's oldest myths say the two gods were born in the land of the dead, from the body of the goddess Izanami. Centuries later, when the Mongol fleets came in 1274 and 1281, storms broke them at sea, and Japan called the wind that saved it 神風, the divine wind. Today the pair stand guard on either side of temple gates, keeping out what should not come in.
The craft
Kutani ware, porcelain from Ishikawa on the Sea of Japan coast, known for its bold overglaze colours.
Living with it
Yunomi are tall teacups without handles, made to be held in both hands. One for each of two people who weather storms together.
