The story
On election night in Japan, the television cameras wait in the campaign office for one moment. When the result comes in, the winning candidate picks up a thick brush and paints the second eye onto a big red daruma. The first eye was painted months before, on the day the campaign began. Losers' daruma go home with one eye.
That is the daruma: you start with half, and you earn the rest. The beckoning cat calls luck in. A right paw is said to invite money and good fortune, a left paw people and customers. So this pair holds both halves of a good year: the effort, and the luck to meet it.
The craft
Kutani ware, porcelain from Ishikawa, decorated with overglaze enamel. The pair is new and has never been used.
Living with it
Small enough for a desk, a till or a windowsill, and a pair means one can go to someone else. If you have a partner in some long effort, a business, a marriage, a degree, you know who has the other cat. A gift for a couple, two friends, or anyone starting out.
