The story
Every child in Japan knows how to beat a kappa, and it is not with a sword.
The kappa lives in rivers. He is small, green and strong enough to pull a horse into the water. But on top of his head is a dish of water, and that water is where his strength lives. He is also very, very polite. So if you meet one, you bow. He cannot help bowing back, the water spills out, and he is as weak as a frog.
He loves cucumbers, hence kappa-maki, the cucumber roll. He is also fond of sake.
The craft
Mino-yaki porcelain, made in Japan in Gifu prefecture. Plain white, a green leaf, a face you can see from across the table.
Living with it
Warm the sake, fill the cups, and bow to whoever you are drinking with. It is good manners, and it is how you find out which one of you is the kappa. You probably have a guess. A small gift for the friend who always brings the bottle.
