The story

In Kyoto in the late 1600s, a fan painter called Miyazaki Yūzensai became so famous that people wanted his pictures on their kimono, not just on their fans. The dyeing method that made it possible was named after him: yūzen. In old age, the story goes, he moved to Kanazawa, in the old province of Kaga, and the style changed in his hands there. Kaga yūzen settled on five deep colours, and on leaves painted with little worm holes on purpose, because real leaves have them.

The craft

The Kaga yūzen pattern is printed on Mino porcelain, made in Japan. Microwave and dishwasher safe, so they can be used every day rather than kept for best.

Living with it

Yunomi are the everyday tea cups of a Japanese home, one per person, and a matched pair is the classic gift for a couple. Green tea in the afternoon, one cup each. If there is someone you always make the second cup for, you already know who these are for. A good wedding or anniversary present too.

• Two teacups, Ø 6 × H 9.3 cm each • Mino porcelain with Kaga yūzen pattern • Microwave and dishwasher safe • Wooden box, new • Made in Japan
