The story

The Shiba is Japan's own small dog, curly-tailed and sure of himself, bred for centuries to hunt in the mountains. During and just after the Second World War he nearly disappeared. Bombing, hunger and, later, disease had taken most of them. A handful of breeders went from village to village looking for the dogs that were left, and rebuilt the breed from the few they found.

Today the Shiba is the most common native dog in Japan. Every one you see on a Tokyo pavement goes back to those few village dogs.

The craft

Mino-yaki, made in Japan in Gifu prefecture, where much of Japan's everyday tableware is made. A Kyoto spring scene runs round the bowl. Microwave and dishwasher safe, so they are for daily use, not the cabinet.

Living with it

Rice in the morning, a side dish at night. If your household is quietly run by a dog, you will understand the expression on these two. A gift for a dog person, or for two people who share one.

• Two bowls, Ø 13 × H 6.7 cm • Mino-yaki, microwave and dishwasher safe • Gift box, new • Made in Japan
