The story

In China, the old story goes, the Empress Wu Zetian once ordered every flower in her garden to bloom in the middle of winter, because she wished it. Overnight they obeyed, all of them except the peony. It refused to flower out of season. The furious empress had every peony torn up and sent away from the capital to Luoyang. There, far from the court, they flourished, and Luoyang became the peony city it still is today.

The peony, botan, came to Japan as the king of flowers: a sign of prosperity and honour, and, after that story, of quiet stubbornness.

The craft

Fukagawa Seiji has worked in Arita, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain, since the Meiji period, and is known for clear, bright glazes and careful brushwork. Ruri is the Japanese name for lapis blue.

Living with it

Peonies in May, branches in autumn, or nothing at all. At 28 cm it can stand on the floor by a tokonoma or on a low cabinet. If you have ever refused to do something just because you were told to, the peony is on your side. A gift for a milestone birthday or a new home.
