The story
In Japanese homes of the Shōwa years, there was often one room kept for visitors: the ōsetsuma, the reception room. It had the best sofa, a low table, a cabinet of good glasses. On the table stood a vase and a matching ashtray, because in those days every guest might smoke and every host wanted flowers. Children were not allowed in. The room waited, clean and quiet, for the boss, the matchmaker, the relative from the city.
Most of those rooms are gone now. Sets like this one were made for them.
The craft
Fukagawa Seiji is a long-established Arita kiln and was named a purveyor to the Imperial Household. The peony, botan, often called the king of flowers, stands for prosperity and honour. Here it is painted in orange against deep indigo blue, with gold detail on clean white porcelain.
Living with it
The vase for a few stems; the ashtray as a tray for keys, rings or a candle. Put them where the light catches the gold. If you grew up with a room like this, you will recognise the set at once. A gift for a parent who kept one.
