The story
Daruma was a monk who, the legend says, sat facing a cave wall for nine years, until his arms and legs wasted away. So the daruma has none. He is round and weighted, and when you knock him over he rolls back up. "Fall seven times, rise eight."
In Japan you buy a daruma when you start something hard. You paint in one eye when you make the wish, and the second eye only when it comes true. Plenty of daruma sit on shelves for years with one eye, waiting. When their time is up, they are not thrown away: they are taken back to a temple and burned with thanks.
The craft
Mino-yaki porcelain, made in Japan in Gifu prefecture, from the Fukuraku series, fortune and ease. Microwave and dishwasher safe; not for the oven.
Living with it
One toast when the plan starts, one when it is done. Nine cups, so the people who helped can drink too. Is there something you have been meaning to begin? A gift for someone about to start a new job, a degree, a shop.
