Daruma Gift Set: Four Cotton Cloths by Hamamonyo
Four cotton cloths, all daruma: one big daruma face with 福, fortune, on its belly; the Seven Lucky Gods, each one dressed as a little daruma; and a tall stack of red daruma among plum blossoms, printed twice — once on a thin tenugui, once on a soft bath towel, so the same design comes in two fabrics.

The story
A daruma is the round red doll that cannot stay down. Push it over and it rolls back up, which is why Japan says nanakorobi yaoki: fall seven times, get up eight. People buy one at the start of a new year or a new venture, paint in one eye when they make a wish, and the second eye when it comes true.
The meaning
A daruma is given for a fresh start: a new year, a new job, a recovery, an exam. These four carry the same wish in cloth, so it can be used every day instead of sitting on a shelf.
The cloths
Three are tenugui, the thin cotton cloth Japan has used for centuries as a towel, a headband or a gift wrap. The fourth is a yukemuri towel: printed cotton on the front, absorbent pile on the back. The daruma stack appears on both, so you can see how one design reads on a flat weave and on a soft towel.
Living with it
Wrap a bottle or a small present in a tenugui instead of paper, hang one on the wall like a print, and keep the towel by the bath. Or split the set between people starting something new.
The short ends of a tenugui are left raw: a few threads loosen in the first washes, then it stops. Wash in cold water the first time.
