The story
In an old Chinese tale, told in Japan as the Noh play Kiku-jidō, a boy who served the emperor stepped over his pillow by mistake and was exiled to a remote valley. Before he left, the emperor quietly gave him two lines of a sutra to protect him. Alone in the valley, the boy wrote the lines on chrysanthemum leaves. The dew that ran off those leaves became an elixir. He drank it, and he lived seven hundred years.
It is one reason the chrysanthemum stands for long life in Japan. It is also, for other reasons, the flower of the Imperial seal.
The craft
Arita porcelain, signed Shuho, made as an ōsetsu-zoroe, a matched set for the reception room. The white ground is kept clean so the overglaze enamels and gold stand out against it.
Living with it
A few stems in the vase, and the ashtray as a tray for keys or rings by the door. If you have someone in your life who seems to have lived a hundred lives, this set is for them. A gift for a 60th, 70th or 80th birthday.
