· · · Homura Tales · No.5 — Amber on Amber In a traditional house in the northern hills of Kyoto, the late afternoon sun stretches across the wooden veranda. I open a small box, revealing dried persimmons that seem to condense the very essence of autumn. As my grandmother taught me, a fine layer of white sugar frost coats the fruit. Placing one on my tongue, the dense, rich sweetness dissolves, marking the deepening of the season. A maple tree in the garden shivers, releasing a few leaves in silent surrender. The memory of sharing these sweets with someone long ago resurfaces, carried by the faint, earthy fragrance of the fruit. A wind chime, hung from the eaves, rings softly in the cooling air. I remain immersed in the amber sweetness until the shadows claim the room. Kyoto’s autumn is profound, quiet, and hauntingly rich. By tomorrow, a new season will arrive, knocking softly at the door.
